2. Bodog – One of the most well-known Canadian sports betting sites

Bodog founder Calvin Ayre rose from humble beginnings on a Saskatchewan pig farm to become one of Canada’s most successful entrepreneurs, and the betting site that he set up over 20 years ago is still going strong today.

And we can certainly see why, as the Bodog betting offering is a well-rounded one, with an excellent range of sports and markets on offer, a strong live betting service, a dedicated prop bets section and an excellent set of NFL specials that were posted months before the start of the season.

There’s also the added bonus of the Bodog forum, where users can post questions and share betting tips with each other.

Their betting offering is just as polished, with a huge amount of sports, markets, special features and existing customer deals on offer. And the BetOnline welcome bonus is one of the best out there, matching 50% of your initial deposit up to $1,000.

How We Rank the Best Betting Sites in Canada

No two Canadian sports betting sites are the same so it’s important to have a good idea about the betting features that are important to you, so you can judge a site by those metrics and pick one that fits your needs exactly!

  • Site Security

The security of Canadian betting sites is our number one priority, so you can always be sure that any sportsbook featured in any of our articles will be properly licensed, regulated and 100% trustworthy. Beyond that, you should always make sure that a bookmaker you are considering joining up with has everything in place to protect their customers’ payment and personal details. And as we always say, when it comes to site security you can’t go wrong with the more established names such as Bodog.

  • Range of Sports

Every sports betting site available to Canadian bettors will feature the most popular sports such as ice hockey, baseball, basketball, football, soccer and horse racing. However, it’s important that sites also cater for people who want to bet on other sports such as cricket, rugby and even eSports. And at MyBookie there are are a generous range of sports on offer, as well as special bets such as politics and WWE wrestling.

  • Markets

It’s one thing having a great range of sports to pick from, but Canada sports betting sites also need to offer a generous range of markets for each sport. The standard market is which team or individual will win a particular matchup but punters also want to see handicap markets such as the margin a certain team will win by, prop bets such as points totals and special future bets such as the NFL MVP. A site should also feature special bets relating to a specific sport such as a golfer finishing in the top 10 at a particular tournament. And we found BetOnline to be one of the best online sports betting sites in Canada when it comes to its range of betting markets.

  • Bonuses and Promotions

The betting industry is a hugely competitive one and with so much choice out there, Canada sports betting sites need to elevate themselves from the pack. And one of the primary ways they can do this is by filling their site with promotions that will reward punters with free bets or extra cash in their betting account.

Common promotions are those that reward punters for betting a certain amount, ones which refund a percentage of your total bets on a particular sport, parlay boosts that can increase the odds of multiple bets, or parlay insurance where your stake will be refunded if just one leg is a loser. And Power Play is packed with promotions for punters to enjoy.

  • Site Features

Features such as in-play betting, live streaming, price boosts, cash out and bet builders all make the betting experience a more immersive and enjoyable one, while also providing the opportunity to boost your bankroll! And BetVictor certainly doesn’t disappoint in that area.

  • Usability

All the features in the world don’t mean a thing if the experience of navigating around a sports betting site and trying to find the market you want to bet on is a frustrating one. And while they are a new addition to the Canadian sports betting landscape, the design and layout of the Powbet site is clean and simple, with all sports listed at the top and right-hand side of the home page, the most popular ones shown prominently and live betting markets easily accessed with just one click.

  • Mobile-Friendliness

Betting on the go has never been more popular so it’s hugely important for a sports betting site to cater for people wagering on their mobile devices. All of the best sports betting sites in Canada that are listed on this page are optimised for viewing on mobile browsers but the very best ones, such as BetVictor, will have a mobile betting app.

  • Odds

Odds are hugely important, particularly to larger stakes bettors, but with thousands of markets to choose from at every sportsbook, it’s impossible to say that any particular bookmaker will always offer the most generous prices across the board. Price comparison sites can be useful tools when searching for the best betting odds but in our experience, betting with the more established sports betting sites such as BetOnline will ensure that even if you don’t get the best odds every time, they will always be competitive.

Types of Welcome Bonuses Available in Canada

Welcome bonuses are a key weapon in a bookmaker’s arsenal when it comes to attracting new customers. And the following are the different types of sports betting bonuses that are offered to new customers at the best sports betting sites in Canada.

Deposit Bonus

The most common new customer deal by far is the deposit bonus, where a percentage of your first deposit is matched up to a certain amount. However, bonuses earned this way cannot be withdrawn until certain wagering requirements have been met, such as wagering 10x the amount of your bonus. All of the sites featured on this page offer deposit deals as part of their sports betting bonuses for new customers.

Top Deposit Bonus Welcome Offers In Canada

  • BetOnline  – 50% deposit bonus up to $1,000
  • MyBookie – 50% deposit bonus up to $1,000
  • Xbet – 50% deposit bonus up to $500

Free Bet

Free bet welcome offers tend to follow the “Bet & Get” format, such as “Bet $20 and get $60 in free bets”. These types of deals are generally less lucrative but the big plus point is that any free bet winnings are generally withdrawable immediately without any wagering restrictions. Bet & Get sports betting bonuses are very common at UK-based sports betting sites but far less prevalent over the Pond.

Risk-Free Bet

Risk-free bets are more commonly found in the existing customer promotions section of a sports betting site but they are occasionally offered as part of a new customer deal. The basic premise of a risk-free bet deal is that your opening bet on a particular sportsbook will be refunded up to a certain amount if it’s unsuccessful. And punters often use risk-free bets to back outcomes at big prices to try and net a big win, safe in the knowledge that their liability is zero.

No Deposit Bonus

This type of bonus is more commonly associated with online casinos, but a small number of the best online sportsbooks may also offer it. Here, a bonus or free bet is earned simply by registering a new account, with no deposit or bet required to qualify.

Key Bonus Terms

We may have referred to some unfamiliar betting terms in this article, so here’s a useful glossary of the key bonus terms that you may come across at Canadian sports betting sites.

  • Deposit Match

Most welcome offers take this form, where a percentage of your initial deposit will be “matched” up to a certain amount, usually 100% but sometimes more or less.

  • Minimum Deposit

There will usually be a minimum initial deposit you will need to make in order to get your hands on a new customer deal.

  • A Minimum Opening Bet

Sometimes you will need to make an opening wager of the same amount as your initial deposit to qualify for a new customer deal.

  • Minimum Odds

Your qualifying bets will frequently need to be placed at a minimum price in order to receive your bonus. These odds will usually be around even money (Evs) in fractional, or 2.0 in decimal odds. In addition, minimum odds can often come into play when you want to place a wager with your free bet.

  • Wagering Requirements

When it comes to deposit bonuses there will often be wagering requirements (sometimes called rollover requirements) such as 10x, 20x, 35x, which will apply either to both your deposit and the bonus, or just the bonus. This doesn’t mean you have to make this number of bets, just that you need to wager this amount multiplied by your bonus before you can withdraw it. So for example, if you have a $100 bonus and a 10x wagering requirement, you will need to place $1,000 in bets before you can get to your money. It’s always important to know what the wagering requirement is at the top betting sites because the higher it is, the harder it will be to put a run of successful bets together without losing it all!

  • Expiry Period

The bonus funds or free bets that you get will nearly always have some sort of expiry date, generally seven days but sometimes up to 21. If you do not use them or meet your wagering requirements within this time period, your bonus funds will disappear.

  • Cap on Winnings

Certain offers will have a cap on how much real money you will be able to win.

  • Eligibility Markets

When placing a qualifying bet or using a free bet, there are often certain types of betting markets and types of bets that will be excluded, such as bet builders or price boosts.

Sports Betting Markets Available In Canada

Nowadays there is a huge amount of choice when it comes to online betting markets, with most sites offering at least 25 different sports to wager on and some even surpassing the 30 mark. It goes without saying that the NHL features heavily on the best sports betting sites in Canada, given that hockey is practically a religion here!

However there are some other significant sporting markets worth mentioning, so let’s look at some of the most popular betting markets for Canadian punters:

NHL Betting Sites

Not only is ice hockey widely considered to be Canada’s national pastime, but it’s a major part of everyday culture. There are three major junior leagues containing 60 teams and countless more kids playing hockey every week, leading to the phrase “hockey mom”, rather than “soccer mom”! Then of course, there’s the NHL, which contains seven Canadian teams, two of which are the most successful outfits of all time. Canadian players also dominate the league and Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers was the NHL’s highest scorer in both 2021 and 2022. So it’s no major shock that the NHL is such a big deal in Canada, and wagering on the NHL is massively popular at the top Canada sports betting sites.

NHL Betting Tips: Many NHL betting experts agree that home ice is routinely overvalued in NHL betting and that playing at home is less of an advantage than in football, for example. Bookmakers tend to set their lines strictly based on power ratings and overall records and don’t take into account a team’s good track record on the road, which can open up strong betting opportunities when backing road teams. This also leads us to our second tip, which is that recent form is often a better indicator than a team’s overall record, so don’t be afraid to back teams with inferior records to their opponents if their recent form is strong.

NFL & CFL Betting Sites

Football is also massively popular in the Great White North and unlike hockey, Canada has its own professional football league, with nine teams competing in the CFL. And added to the sports juggernaut that is the NFL, Canadian football fans are spoiled for choice when it comes to gridiron action. And with Toronto being home to NBA, MLB and NHL teams already, it would be no surprise to see an NFL franchise in the Queen City in the coming years.

NFL & CFL Betting Tips: There are so many variables that influence the result of a football game that it can often be a profitable strategy to focus on one specific prop bet that can be a winner regardless of the match result. Common prop bets are a player’s individual yardage to be above or below a given number or a player to score a touchdown. And with so many stats available it can be easy to earmark which player you think will have a successful day!

eSports Betting Sites

Canadian eSports is very much on the rise, with player participation and eSports viewing figures rising significantly every year.  And it’s a movement that is growing from the ground up, with 12 Canadian universities teaming up in 2021 to launch the Canadian Collegiate Esports League (CCEL), a unified body for Canadian collegiate esports. This has led to a rise in eSports betting sites, offering a good range of games such as League of Legends, Dota 2 and CS:GO, lots of markets, along with live streaming.

eSports Betting Tips: Gather as much information as you can about the games you wish to wager on by watching matchups on YouTube or Twitch and ideally picking up a controller yourself! If you’re considering a bet on a particular team then look at their previous results and try and find trends when it comes to strategy. For instance, are they traditionally fast starters who get the first kill more often than not? Are certain players more aggressive than others? You can always find these stats online and sometimes this information will also be available on sites such as CS:GO betting sites. And the more information you can gather the more chance you will have of making successful bets.

Where to Find the Best Betting Odds

You are never going to be able to find a sports betting site that always has the absolute best sports betting odds on offer, because of the thousands of markets available at Canadian sports betting sites  However, some operators do manage to consistently deliver strong sports betting odds across the board. Here are some of the online betting sites in Canada with the best betting odds:

Payment Methods Available to Bettors in Canada

Today’s forward-thinking consumers are gravitating more and more to different payment methods such as eWallets, Apple Pay and Google Pay in their everyday life. And that certainly applies to Canadian bettors too! Interac is a service specific to Canadian customers while Skrill, MuchBetter and EcoPayz are also hugely popular with Canadian punters.

And with cryptocurrency here to stay, many people are also looking to deposit this way too! So it’s important that the top sports betting sites move with the times and offer these types of payment methods alongside the more usual methods of checking cards and bank transfers.

Payment method Fees Min deposit Min Withdrawal
Credit/Debit Card 0% $20 $20
Interac 0% $10 $10
ecoPayz 0% $20 $20
MuchBetter 0% $20 $20
Cryptocurrency 0% $20 $20
Bank Transfer 0% $20 $20

Betting Apps & Mobile Sports Betting in Canada

Almost 90% of Canada’s 38 million population are smartphone users so it’s no shock that a huge number of them are looking to partake in sports betting online through sports betting apps on their phones. The majority of betting sites for sports will have sports betting apps that you can download to your phone, but even the newer sites that have not introduced a sports betting app will usually have an optimised site to look at in portrait mode on your mobile web browser.

And here is a look at some of the best sports betting apps when it comes to mobile sports betting Canada:

  • BetVictor – Bet Builder offer
  • Bodog – One of Canada’s most trusted betting brands
  • BetOnline – Excellent welcome bonus

How to Open an Account at a Canadian Bookmaker

Opening a new account at a sports betting site is generally a quick and easy process, where you can be up and running and placing a bet in a matter of minutes. The number of forms you need to fill in will vary from site to site but the information you need to provide is pretty standard across all the top sports betting sites.

Step 1: Visit the Website or App

The first step on the path to placing a wager is to head to your chosen sports betting site’s home page or download their app, before clicking on “Register”, “Open Account”, “Play Now”, or similar!

Step 4: Start Betting

Once your account is up and running it’s time to place some bets, and while all sites are different when it comes to their layout, the general setup on every sportsbook is that the range of sports available can either be found at the top or the left-hand side of the page. Then it’s just a case of clicking the sport you wish to bet on, choosing the specific match or market and then selecting the price to add to your bet slip.

Practical Online Betting Tips

Online betting should always be an enjoyable and worry-free experience, but we have learned over time that there are specific sports betting tips you can follow in order to ensure that this is the case:

1. Bet on sports you know about

In our opinion, one of the biggest mistakes a punter can make is to regularly bet on sports which they know little or nothing about. Having a bet can make following a sport you like more enjoyable but wagering on things you aren’t familiar with reduces betting to nothing more than a means to make money. And of course, if you don’t know much about a sport you are making far less informed betting decisions that are more likely to cost you money.

2. Familiarise yourself with different types of bets

A key element of sports betting is finding outcomes that your research has led you to believe the bookies have priced up too generously. These are called “value bets” and to increase your chances of identifying them, you need to know all the different markets that sports betting sites offer. For instance, when it comes to the big North American sports, makes sure you know all about the different types of prop bets and handicaps on offer that apply to both teams and individual performances.

3. Manage your bankroll

It’s really important to allocate yourself a certain amount of money to bet with over a certain time period and stick to it, win or lose! Then you also need to make sure you are only betting a small portion of your bankroll at any given time, which will help you absorb any bad runs that you may experience. And we would also highly recommend taking advantage of the tools provided by sports betting sites, such as daily, weekly and monthly deposit limits.

4. Don’t chase your losses

When you’ve lost a bet you may feel a strong urge to try and win that money back as quickly as possible, but it’s really important not to try and chase your losses instantly because it will more than likely lead to you gambling more than you should, betting on an event you know nothing about, or both!

5. Check out expert betting opinions

There are a huge amount of free sports betting tips written by reputable and reliable tipsters available online which you can take advantage of to form your betting opinions. And one of the major advantages of utilising these free sports betting tips is that they are written by people whose job it is to research and write about betting, so you can be sure they will be featuring betting angles that you may not have thought of.

Online Gambling Laws in Canada

The first thing to say here is that there are no laws specifically prohibiting Canadian online gaming players from using international sites. There is also no Canadian-wide legislation to regulate online gambling, with each of Canada’s 10 provinces and the territories of Yukon, Nunavut, and the Northwest Territories being free to set their own gambling laws.

And the good news for Canadian bettors is that nine out of the 10 provinces allow its residents to gamble freely online, with Saskatchewan and all three territories being the only exceptions.

However, it’s important to note that even in areas where online gambling is not technically legal, it would be far more likely that a company setting up an online sports betting site within that province or territory would be prosecuted, rather than someone visiting those sites.

betonline NHL futures

And of course, it’s nigh on impossible to regulate what people are doing in their own homes, so as a general rule, Canadians can place bets online throughout Canada at offshore betting sites without fear of prosecution.

One major caveat to sports betting in Canada is that until recently, Canadians could not legally bet on single matches. The only way to bet was on parlays that involved multiple sporting outcomes. However, that changed on August 27, 2021 thanks to the passage of Bill C-218.

Now, bettors in all provinces except for Nova Scotia can bet on individual games.

Here’s how online sports betting legalization has progressed in Canada in recent years:

Canada Betting Legislation Timeline

  • February 2020: Bill C-218, which would allow single-game betting in Canada, is introduced into parliament. The bill came as several US states bordering Canada, including New Hampshire, Michigan, and New York, sought to legalize or expand online sports betting.
  • June 2020: The NFL, NBA, MLB, and NHL express support for single-game sports betting in Canada.
  • April 2021: The Canadian House of Commons passed Bill C-218, sending it to the Senate for a vote.
  • June 2021: Bill C-218 was approved by the Canadian Senate and received royal assent.
  • August 27, 2021: Legal single-game sports betting came into effect. Provinces would be able to set their own rules for single-game betting. Ontario and British Columbia, 2 of Canada’s largest betting markets, quickly moved to allow single-game betting.
  • March 2022: 888, Bragg Gaming, BetRivers, FanDuel, Unibet, Bet365, Kambi and BetMGM all receive approval from Ontario’s AGCO for legal sports betting in the province.
  • April 4, 2022: The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) launches its iGaming program in this flagship sports betting province.

How Online Sports Betting Works in Each Province

Each individual province is responsible for sports betting licensing within its territory, so what that means is there are differences in which types of betting are technically legal throughout Canada.

So here’s a province-by-province look at the current legal state of sports betting in Canada.

Ontario Online Gambling

Ontario has the highest population of all Canadian provinces and it is also viewed as Canada’s flagship gambling area, with over 25 land-based casinos for its residents to enjoy! The province also launched an iGaming program in early 2022, leading to the creation of several online legal and regulated betting sites in Ontario.

Quebec Online Gambling

Both online and retail sports betting is legal in Quebec, but currently only at the Quebec-run Mise-o-jeu (retail) and Mise-o-jeu+ (online) locations. And there is also talk that the Quebec government will look to block any online gaming site that’s not approved and licensed by their own gambling regulatory organisation.

Nova Scotia Online Gambling

Single game betting (both online and retail) was made legal in Nova Scotia in February 2022, but there aren’t any online or retail betting outlets as yet in Nova Scotia aside from the Atlantic Lottery Corporation (ALC) run retailers or the Pro-Line Stadium online site.

New Brunswick Online Gambling

The situation in New Brunswick is the same as Nova Scotia, in that online gambling is controlled by the ALC and you can only bet online at the Pro-Line Stadium site, or at approved ALC retailers.

Manitoba Online Gambling

Online gambling in Manitoba is controlled by the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Corporation (MBLL). After British Columbia enjoyed success with a government-owned gaming website, Manitoba adopted the same business model in 2013. And PlayNow Manitoba and Sport Select are the only online sportsbooks operating within the province.

British Columbia Gambling

British Columbia residents have a lot of choices when it comes to gambling, including the Fraser Downs racecourse, a province-run lottery and 15 casinos. However, the only regulated and entirely legal gambling site in BC is PlayNow, run by the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, which also runs a retail sportsbook at the Starlight Casino in New Westminster.

Prince Edward Island Online Gambling

Another province under the control of the ALC when it comes to online gambling is Prince Edward Island, where residents can bet legally but only at the ALC’s Pro-Line Stadium site, or at an ALC-approved retail location.

Saskatchewan Online Gambling

People in Saskatchewan can only currently place bets on single games at retail outlets approved by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation.

The Saskatchewan Indian Gambling Authority (SIGA) has announced plans to launch an online single-game betting platform in the summer of 2022, a move which has been sanctioned by the Saskatchewan Liquor and Gaming Authority.

Alberta Online Gambling

The largest of the Prairie Provinces in terms of population, Alberta has a long tradition of sports and gambling. And they receive a higher percentage of their budget from gambling revenue than any other province.

The licensing board of Alberta is Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), who offer single-game sports betting  at the PlayAlberta site, and at the Sport Select site which is run by the Western Canada Lottery Corporation (WCLC).
