3 things you might have missed at the “Cisco: Simplifying Hybrid Cloud” event

Hybrid and edge computing environments are growing, leading to new distributed cloud models for computing.

As hybrid and edge ecosystems grow, enterprises must manage a wide range of compute resources in an operating model that has become significantly more complex. Cisco Systems Inc. has made several recent announcements to address this issue by introducing enhancements to its HyperFlex and UCS X-Series hardware solutions.

TheCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s live streaming studio, and Cisco explored the latest news and trends surrounding the cloud operating model at the recent “Cisco: Simplifying Hybrid Cloud” event. (*Disclosure below.)

Here are three things you might have missed at the event:

1. As applications grow, monitoring and comprehensive observability become more critical

Early in theCUBE’s interview with DD Dasgupta, Vice President of Product Management, Cloud and Compute Solutions at Cisco, it was clear that today’s applications are driving the success of the business.

“Every company today is a software company. They live and die by how their apps work or not,” Dasgupta said. “It’s not just about how they work within their organizations, but how they work in all the different organizations. Meanwhile, we’re also seeing quite a dramatic shift in the app landscape itself.

This changing landscape puts application performance monitoring and full-stack observability in the spotlight. Just having apps is only part of the equation. Keeping them working as intended is critical, and the application performance monitoring market is expected to reach $12 billion by 2026.

Full-stack observability has become a priority for enterprises as organizations rely on application monitoring tools, from customer-facing software to operational solutions on the back-end. Recent data provided to SiliconANGLE by Enterprise Technology Research showed that market opportunities in observability are wide open.

2. Edge is becoming a major customer use case for Cisco

At Cisco’s Investor Day meeting last fall, CEO Chuck Robbins listed the six key technology areas where the company’s fortunes would rise or fall, and the edge computing market did. part. During the company’s November earnings call, executives noted that Cisco’s growth in its enterprise routing portfolio was driven by the edge and SD-WAN.

Cisco customer use cases reflect a growing interest in the edge. The company’s advanced Internet of Things computing technology is deployed by Transport for New South Wales in Sydney, Australia to provide real-time data on the performance of various public transport systems.

At Calvary Health Care, Cisco’s HyperFlex Edge solution simplifies remote site management by improving IT operations to support a distributed network with 50 hospitals, senior care facilities and community centers. Cisco’s traction with HyperFlex shows that enterprises are interested in the benefits of a hyperconverged solution at the edge.

“They want ease of management. Ease of deployment becomes easier with hyperconvergence, especially with the edge,” said Darren Williams, HyperFlex Global Director of Sales and Business Development, in an interview with theCUBE. “Edge is a major key use case for us. Our customers want a data center at the edge without a big investment.

3. Cisco’s partnership with AMD appears to be thriving

The UCS partnership between Cisco and chip giant Advanced Micro Devices Inc. dates back to 2018 when a new line of servers was unveiled, featuring AMD EPYC processors for the first time.

Since then, AMD has featured prominently in subsequent Cisco news. AMD Chief Executive Dr. Lisa Su was appointed to the Cisco Board of Directors in 2020. AMD’s EPYC 7003 processors were included in Cisco’s redesign of its UCS server line in 2021.

Cisco’s most recent announcements in March for UCS included AMD’s EPYC processors due to what one executive described as “high core counts.” AMD recently announced the general availability of third-generation EPYCs with what the company touted as the world’s first data center processor using 3D die stacking.

“In the short period of time we’ve had direct UCS/AMD support, we’ve had several record-breaking benchmark results that we’ve published,” said Manish Agarwal, senior director of product management at Cisco, during a conversation with theCUBE. during the event. “It’s a powerful platform with a lot of performance.”
