The VIBE Voices of the Year were selected by an Editorial Board led by the Editor-in-Chief of VIBE Dawton Thomas. Other members of the selection committee include Christine Imarénezoreditor-in-chief, VIBE, Eugenia Miranda Richmaneditor of SheKnows.com, and Jiji UgbomaFounder, Clever-ish Magazine and Senior Director of Publisher Engagement, SHE Media.

TECHNICAL – Shavone Charles (known as Shavone)
Shavone is a true renaissance woman who is a classically trained musician, author, tech change agent, and current DEI lead at Tik Tok. She also supports black women in music and amplifies the stories of creative women of color by launching Magic in her melaninhis own creative collective and in-house agency that will serve as a key platform for any creative direction surrounding his art and music.
BEAUTY – Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye
Diarrha N’Diaye-Mbaye is the founder of Friend Cole, a clean beauty brand for people with melanin-rich skin. A pioneer in the beauty and business categories, she has combined her passion for beauty with over 8 years of marketing experience within major heritage brands such as L’Oréal and disruptive start-up environments such as Glossier to create Ami Colé.
SPORTS – Adrian Smith
Her love for television, film, education and sports has taken her around the world and given rise to a myriad of amazing opportunities. As an athlete, Adrian Smith won two gold medals and two national championships in the sport of women’s football with tackling. As an entrepreneur, she is co-founder of Harlem Hip Hop Toursthe founder of Gridiron Queendomand the creator of Blitz Champz. Whether on the pitch or off, Adrienne’s purpose is to “empower” (empower + inspire) others.
About the VIBE Voice of the Year Panel
Dawton Thomas is editor-in-chief of VIBE magazine and vice-president of cultural media for MRC. Mr. Thomas has served as Founder and Editorial Director of men’s lifestyle guide, KING Magazine; the favorite of urban car enthusiasts, RIDES Magazine; and was the editor of hip-hop street authority, XXL Magazine. Additionally, he also served as Founder/Editorial Director of XXL Presents Hip-Hop Soul, a publication dedicated to documenting the successful hybrid genre of R&B and Hip-Hop. Thomas was also EIC of the hip-hop photojournalism magazine RESPECT.
Christine Imarénezor is the Managing Editor of VIBE, where she oversees the website’s daily editorial content and manages its dynamic team of editors, journalists and writers. Prior to joining the team, she began her career in digital journalism as an editor at the now defunct Concrete Loop and was an early adopter of social media marketing while managing artists’ social media accounts in Bad Boy Entertainment/Warner Music Group’s new media department. . A former student of Northwestern University, Christine obtained her bachelor’s degree in communication. She’s a former high school band nerd, who loves gospel and R&B music and likes to go on day hikes every once in a while.
Eugenia Miranda Richman is the Editor-in-Chief of SheKnows.com, She Media’s flagship site and premier parenting destination. As an editorial strategist and award-winning journalist, Eugenia led the evolution of SheKnows from a lifestyle publication to a site that holistically serves moms with the latest food, celebrity, health and lifestyle news. parenting, as well as shopping stories, trials and features on all the issues that matter to them. Jiji is a writer who believes in the power of content to fuel valuable conversations that drive change. In her spare time, she writes about the Nigerian food scene in New York.
